up on my high horse

This infuriates me on so many levels.  Not sure why they only make chocolate flavor for 12 months and up?  Hell, why not start them on crap food and sugar & fake flavor at 3 months?

If you have a child that’s 12 months old (or any age) and are contemplating giving this to them, DON’T.  I don’t even understand why they MAKE “formula” for kids that old?  Oh, right, cause parents are too lazy to take responsibility for their child’s nutrition and think that giving them powdered sh*t with “probiotics”, etc will make them healthy.

Think again.  All the nutrients your child needs can be found in REAL FOOD and won’t get them addicted to sugar and fake flavor.

(How many adults even know what REAL chocolate tastes like?  A kid, maybe about 12 or so, came to our house the other day, selling candy for a fundraiser.  I felt badly, but, I immediately told him, “I’m sorry, we don’t eat that kind of stuff here.”  If Mr Nikki wants chocolate, he either digs through the stash of gourmet, real chocolate in the cabinet, or I bake something with high quality, real chocolate.  Real chocolate does not taste like Snickers or chocolate powders in diet drinks or toddler formula or…)

Please, I beg you – don’t give this stuff to your child.  At that age, he can be eating real food.  At that age, if things like “probiotics” call to you, you can buy actual probiotic supplements (Mr Nikki and I take them every morning) at a health food or vitamin store.

Nugget will be starting on solids in a few weeks.  We got a handy list from our (naturopath) pediatrician of how to introduce foods, nutrient by nutrient.  I’ll be following it to a “t” but more importantly, I’ll be making all his baby food myself – every single bite that goes into his mouth & I’ll know the source, what’s in it.  I will not be adding sugar or powders.  If he doesn’t like something, I’ll go through all the foods until I find what he does like and give him more of that, perhaps mixed with a little of what he doesn’t like.

I know that kids are unpredictable and can be picky eaters.  But I also know that the people I know who are diehard whole foods people and who give their kids things like lentil soup and raw milk and sauteed kale (my friend’s 2 year old daughter) seem to be far less picky than most.  My plan of attack is to let Nugget take an active role in choosing what he & we eat.  I plan on giving him options, taking him grocery shopping with me, asking him questions, and having him help me cook.  He does this already, really – I talk to him the entire time we’re at the farmer’s markets or co-op.  I talk to him while I’m cooking our dinner, I let him hold the various fruits & vegetables.  He watches everything with interest.  I hope – HOPE – that this will influence his eating habits.  Time will tell, but I know that no matter how picky he may turn out to be, I will NEVER EVER EVER give him things like chocolate toddler powder.

choco toddler powder, ew. what are people thinking, i swear. when my kids started to eat solids, i just fed them off my plate. which was mostly veggies, maybe some homemade baba ganoush, that kind of thing. real food. (i actually never gave sharkey any pureed food cuz he hated it, just gave him itty bitty bites instead.)
we emphasize real, whole foods and have always just talked honestly with our boys about the impact of good food on our bodies. so even though we don’t limit treats at all, my youngest would rather snack on raw veggies than a cookie any day, and he has an AMAZING palate. he loves things like indian food/spicy stuff/interesting salads – he’s my little foodie buddy 🙂 my oldest is pickier only because he has an ultra-sensitive palate due to food allergies, so he prefers really bland foods. (like a lot of fruit is way too ‘tart’ for him.) which drives me crazy 🙂
i just figure if i give them good stuff like, 90percent of the time, i’m not gonna sweat it if they eat some candy or fake chocolate once in a while. but then again, i secretly would much rather have a twix bar than dark chocolate any day 🙂
